Afghanistan debacle?

To the Editor: President Obama is trying to decide our military strategy in Afghanistan. He is mulling over input from his civilian and military advisers, and members of Congress, but he cannot make a timely decision because of his lack of military and national security experience. His community organizing background is not very helpful in this situation. It appears he will follow a path of political compromise similar to the policies that handcuffed our military in Vietnam. Obama is attempting to stifle his generals and turn them into Obama puppets, which will kill initiative and inhibit candid assessments of the war. This is a recipe for disaster in Afghanistan and could produce another war dominated by unsound military decisions made by politicians. Predator drones, air power, missiles and mechanized armies cannot defeat the Taliban and al Qaida because of the extremely rugged terrain that is home to these fighters. General…

Learning From History

Written by David J. Glenn
Usually, when politicians speak at dinners or make announcements during photo ops, their statements are hardly inspiring or memorable. But amid the congratulatory platitudes and awful fish puns of Mayor Bloomberg’s address at the launch of the aquarium’s “Sea Change,” he made an important point: While many cry “Cut! Cut!” during this economic crisis, Bloomberg said the multi-million dollar project was important especially now. “We’re not going to make the same mistakes of the 1970s,” when the city severely cut back on cultural and enrichment programs during a similar crisis, he said. “It took decades to recover from that.” The mayor, for one, is indeed learning from history. Aquariums, museums, libraries, live theaters, and the like (notice, Mr. Borough President, that we didn’t include intrusive rock-concert amphitheaters) are vital to any large city, but are particularly essential in the unique city of New York. This is not only because of…

Your Money or Your Life!

Written by I. Freidin
The health industry’s efforts to confuse the public and discard real health care reform. “Your money or your life!” the thief demanded. Jack Benny, the comedian who made a career of extreme frugality, after a long pause replied, “I’m thinking!” invoking peels of laughter. The absurdity of placing money over life! But this seems to be the thinking of many Americans today. Money and other issues are placed on a level equal to or above the physical well being; even the lives; of themselves and their families. Countless millions spent by the insurance companies and others in the health industry have served to confuse the issue to such an extent that people would actually choose money over life. These huge corporations would water down or eliminate any real health reform that would cut into their immense profits. This is the only country in the industrialized world that does not provide…

Who Looks Out For Us?

Written by I. Freidin
Isn’t the primary job of government to protect its citizens from jeopardy from within and without? Our government surely botched 9/11; the great danger from the outside. But possibly worse is the neglect that led to the collapse of Enron, the housing market and the Bernie Madoff debacle, to name just a few. In so many cases, our government, rather than look out for our interests, is complicit in allowing the public to be bilked, debasing our standard of living and degrading our quality of life. Th e profi ts of the insurance companies and banks, among others, take precedence over the needs of citizens.

The Last of His Kind

Written by I. Freidin
It wasn’t just the man who died. There were the indiscretions, and Chappaquiddick never went away. But Ted Kennedy’s life meant so much more than the person with human foibles and frailties. His passing marked the last of the New Dealers; policy that represented social progress; people before profit; empowerment for the public over the forces of ignorance and greed. There are very few heroes in American politics; virtually none in the higher echelons. Th e nature of the profession and the system in which it exists doesn’t allow it. Th e Kennedy brothers, though, were as close as you could get; the rich boys who championed the causes of the people; understood their needs and tried to fulfi ll them. Despite their human shortcomings; and there were many; they represented the needs of the American public; rising well above the legacy of their father who unscrupulously clawed his way…

Letters to the Editor

Absolutely Right When David Glenn wrote in his previous Publisher’s Notebook, "It's not just about health care reform," he was absolutely right. It's about the politicians trying to ram a convoluted heath care reform bill down our throats and refusing to listen to their constituency. George Najarian Marine Park
