PUBLISHER'S NOTEBOOK -- Those not counted
Written by David J. Glenn
There was considerable media build-up leading to, and of course including, the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Seemingly every local and national news outlet printed or broadcast special editions or programs (we didn't join in, simply because we really didn't feel we could add very much to the saturation coverage, although we will report on the local 9/11 memorials in our next issue). There's nothing wrong, of course, with such commemorations (although the increased level of advertising for these special projects suggests that the tributes were not solely altruistic). But it is a curious phenomenon that any anniversaries seem to take on tremendously more significance whenever their cardinal numbers end in a zero, like 10th, 20th, and so on. Why was last year's ninth anniversary of 9/11 any less important, and why will next year's 11th not generate anywhere near the attention…

But in addition to the discomfort and inconvenience suffered by all – and severe hardship by some -- millions of dollars have been spent on snow removal as well as the loss of millions more in fines due to the suspension of parking rules. So who’s going to pay?

Borough President Marty Markowitz has used a Yiddish term to describe opposition to his proposed massive amphitheater in a residential-area park – “shonda,” a shame.
We’d like to use another Yiddish term to describe the Brooklyn beep’s latest actions – “chutzpah.”

To sum up the rants usually associated with this column; ignorance and greed has contributed to establishing the United States as a corporate empire as quality of life sinks lower and lower, and the Bloomberg tyranny has been the scourge of lower and middle class New Yorkers, making the city unaffordable and chasing many away. That said, the rest of this space will be dedicated to a subject more immediately useful.

Previously mentioned in this column was an upcoming Supreme Court decision that would allow corporate interests unlimited spending on political campaigns.
Rendering invalid laws passed through the years to reform campaign spending, the nightmare has now become reality.
