He has taken classes including astronomy, history and even art. “I’m now taking a class in African American History,” he told a reporter on a recent visit to the My Turn office. “We are in classes with younger individuals. I’ve always felt that if you stick with the young, you begin to feel younger.” Kingsborough Community College’s My Turn program gives older adults the chance to continue learning and improving their lives, said Beverly Collier, the new director of My Turn, open to anyone 60 years or older. Their only cost is a one-time $80 registration fee. “They are treated as regular students, integrating themselves in classes with younger students,” said Collier.
My Turn was started in 1981 by Collier’s predecessor, Barbara Ginsberg, who knew that many elders had missed the opportunity for extended education in their earlier years.
“Now it’s their turn to go to school and take anything that they want to take,” said Collier. ”We also have some professionals in the program with various degrees and experience. The other day I met a man who is a retired lawyer. It’s his turn, too. He’s in his second semester of sculpture.”
In their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, each My Turner has an opportunity to contribute his or her knowledge and experience to the younger classmates. “We talk about what was,” said Arline Pollinger, a My Turn student and advisor to the program. “We’re inspired by the people who come here. Every day becomes a new adventure.”
Collier said KCC professors have told her that the My Turn students are “a delightful addition” to their classroom. My Turners can choose to take classes for credit and receive a degree, or take classes just to learn a new subject.
My Turn can help elders remain vibrant and avoid becoming isolated and depressed. “This program saves my life. You come across widowers, you make friends and connect,” said Arthur Fishbein, 82. “I’ve even been friendly with my professors.”
Any My Turner can join the My Turn Club. The Club, offering field trips, support groups, and chances to volunteer in the community, including tutoring high school students.
