The class is free, and as long as you’re at least 18 years old, all you have to bring is yourself. “All the tools we need to build just about anything are available in class,” Kaplan said.
Participants work in groups to construct tables, cabinets, magazine shelves, and, of course, an 8-foot tall windmill – items that will be used by the Nature Center.
Kaplan first teaches the class how to properly use the tools – this is an essential first step, since many of the tools can be dangerous if not handled right. He goes around to each group and guides the students in their project.
The class usually meets indoors but if it’s a nice day the class is held outside on the grounds of the Nature Center.
Kaplan, who volunteers his time, says he really enjoys teaching woodworking. “People are interest in it,” he said, adding that some of his students have been participating for more than two years.
The class meets every Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. For more information, call the Nature Center at 718-421-2021.
